چکیده

purpose: to assess the short-term effect of mitomycin-c (mmc) 0.02% on endothelial cell density and morphology after photorefractive keratectomy (prk) in patients with moderate myopia. methods: forty-two eyes of 21 participants with moderate myopia (range, -4.0 to -8.0 d) underwent prk with mmc 0.02% for 40 seconds. specular microscopy was performed preoperatively and repeated 6 months after surgery to determine any change in central endothelial cell density (ecd), mean cell area (mca), and coefficient of variation in cell size (cv). results: mean patient age was 26.2±6.3. mean preoperative spherical equivalent refractive error was -5.2±1.2 d which was reduced to -0.4±0.5 d postoperatively (p < 0.001). mean ecd was reduced insignificantly from 2920±363 cells/mm2 preoperatively to 2802±339 cells/mm2 postoperatively (p = 0.59). similarly, there was no significant change in mca (p= 0.76) or cv (p= 0.52) at six months. conclusion: intraoperative mmc 0.02% applied for 40 seconds during prk for moderate myopia did not significantly change central corneal endothelial cell density and morphology after 6 months.

The Effect of Mitomycin-C on Corneal Endothelial Cells after Photorefractive Keratectomy

PURPOSE To evaluate short-term changes in central corneal endothelial cell density and morphology after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with mitomycin-C (MMC) 0.02% in patients with moderate myopia. METHODS In this prospective interventional case series, patients with moderate myopia (spherical equivalent refractive error from -4.0 to -8.0 D) underwent PRK with a single intraoperative appli...

Mitomycin C in photorefractive keratectomy.

PURPOSE To evaluate the outcome of primary or retreatment photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) or phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) with mitomycin C (MMC) 0.02% applied prophylactically intraoperatively for the prevention of haze and regression in cases of significant haze and regression after primary PRK, due to previous radial keratotomy (RK), in primary PRK eyes with high myopia, and in comeas...

Corneal ectasia after photorefractive keratectomy.

Two patients developed corneal ectasia after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Case 1 had evidence of early keratoconus preoperatively, with manifest refractions of -4.00 +2.50 x 160 (20/20) in the right eye and -7.00 +3.00 x 180 (20/30) in the left eye; thin corneas (472 microm and 441 microm, respectively); and inferior paracentral steepening in the right eye and central steepening in the le...

Outcomes of Photorefractive Keratectomy with Intraoperative Mitomycin-C

PURPOSE To report the efficacy, safety, predictability and complications of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with intraoperative application of mitomycin-C (MMC). METHODS This historical cohort study was performed on 1,250 eyes of 625 patients who underwent PRK using the Technolas 217 excimer laser machine by a single surgeon with intraoperative use of MMC 0.02% up to 2 minutes, depending on...

Corneal Regeneration After Photorefractive Keratectomy: A Review.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) remodels corneal stroma to compensate refractive errors. The removal of epithelium and the ablation of stroma provoke the disruption of corneal nerves and a release of several peptides from tears, epithelium, stroma and nerves. A myriad of cytokines, growth factors, and matrix metalloproteases participate in the process of corneal wound healing. Their balance w...

Comparison of Standard and Low Dose Intraoperative Mitomycin C in Prevention of Corneal Hazeafter Photorefractive Keratectomy

BACKGROUND This study aimed to compare two doses of Mitomycin C in reducing haze formation after photorefractive keratectomy. METHODS 170 eyes of 85 patients enrolled; in each patient one eye randomly assigned to be treated by low dose intraoperative MMC (LDMMC) and other eye by standard dose MMC (SDMMC). Then the patients were followed up to 6 months and refraction, Uncorrected Distant Visua...
